<Poem>

<Translation>
Late into the night
I sit on our south veranda

moonlight spreads itself
across my knees

a gust of wind has flipped
the Milky Way

sun begins to streak
a nearby housetop

creatures start to wake up
now they've had a rest

they'll set out to forage
along with their own kind

same way I'll wake my sons
and send them out to work

we're selfish, after all,
and need to hoard our food

Very few travelers pass this way
in this cold weather

the year winds down
and time speeds up

the world is mostly
swarms of hungry insects

because we humans have
this passion to succeed

before we had a history
and grew into an empire

humans were quite content
when they had filled their bellies

but they started keeping records
invented government and education

now we're all snared
in that huge net

The man who discovered fire, Sui,
criminal or mastermind?

then the historians came, like Tung,
judging good and bad

anyone ought to know
when you light lamps and candles

moths are going to come
in swarms

but if your spirit can soar
beyond the far horizons

it will find stillness, emptiness
in all directions

and to understand that it's all one－
life and death, going and coming

that is the secret
of immortality
